Krasnodembskaya’s research group works with Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs)-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) with the goal of development of EV-therapeutics for respiratory diseases and novel ex vivo models of human lung tissue.
Our central goal is to understand how EVs work in the context of the injury microenvironment, how EVs modulate reparative capacities of the host cells, and if we can enhance EV therapeutic potential through modification. More recently, we developed novel human lung organoid model, which allows us to better study mechanisms of disease and test therapies; further optimisation of this model can be an exciting topic for potential PhD projects.

Mr Mahmood is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in the Institute of Inflammation & Ageing at the University of Birmingham and major trauma research lead at the Institute of Translational Medicine. He is one of the first and very few holders of the Diploma from the American Board of Regenerative Medicine awarded by the American Academy of Regenerative Medicine in the UK & Europe. He founded the UK based Academy of Regenerative Medicine which is the premier provider of education and accredited training in regenerative medicine in Europe. He is also one of the few Orthopaedic surgeons in the UK that is trained in Ultrasound and does all of his treatments under ultrasound guidance to enable a higher level of precision and improve patient outcomes from non-surgical or minimally invasive techniques.

Dr. Camila Marques de Freria earned her Ph.D. in Neuroscience at Medical Science School-FCM, University of Campinas-UNICAMP, Brazil followed by her post-doctoral training at the Ohio State University where she worked with modulation of inflammatory response after spinal cord injury. Her study identified novel strategies for the treatment of ischemic spinal cord injury. Dr. Freria further received her Physiotherapy degree with a specialty in Neuropediatric. She is currently a member of the Center for Neural Repair under the guidance of Dr. Mark Tuszynski at the University of California San Diego where her work focuses on identify transcriptional mechanisms underlying potential benefits of stem cells combined with rehabilitation to improve functional recovery after spinal cord injury.
